“ I've been wanting to try the pastries at Backhaus for some time now and had to pick up some goods to-go when I found myself in downtown Burlingame recently. This location is larger than the San Mateo one with seating inside. For pastries I got the almond croissant, pear & chocolate scone and egg & speck croissant. My favorite was the egg & speck croissant which had a nice smoky, salty touch from the speck and overall well-balanced. The sweet items were just ok. Overall I found the croissant to be a bit soggy and doesn't compare to some of the bakeries in SF. The pear & chocolate scone didn't really taste anything like pear and the chocolate was a bit too sweet as well. Perhaps next time I have to try the breakfast sandwich but for me the pastries I probably wouldn't get again. ”
“ I've never had Backhaus, but my husband has and he was excited to visit their Burlingame location. You can expect a line out the door on a Sunday afternoon especially after a class is out at Basecamp next door. The staff does their best to manage the line quickly and you can find seats both upstairs and downstairs. There is only one line for both coffee and pastries, no separate line for any matter hence why the line is long. It did give us a time to figure out what we wanted. I've seen people rave about their mushroom sandwich, but unfortunately that was sold out when we got there so we opted for their regular breakfast sandwich instead which was still good and flavorful. Overall, I like the vibes of this location. It's spacious enough to have a conversation with your group without feeling claustrophobic. The staff also brings you your drinks and sandwiches to your table so you won't need to stand around waiting. Parking is the only downside especially on the weekends, but if the weather is nice enough then the walk wouldn't be bad. ”
“ This is a nice bakery located in Burlingame. There is a lot of seating upstairs with a lot of natural light. They do not charge tips since they pay their employees a fair wage and benefits. That's great! I tried the everything croissant and I liked it! It's a little on the smaller side so it's a good snack. The croissant is a bit messy and you'll probably have crumbs everywhere when you eat it. I do like the cream cheese in the middle of the croissant! It did taste like an everything bagel in croissant form! The Backhaus breakfast was interesting. The soft boiled egg still had the shell on so it was a bit messy to remove the shell bits before eating. The bread came with cheese, cream cheese, arugula, jam, the egg, and a little bit of salt flakes! It looked kind of a like a deconstructed sandwich! I also tried the chocolate hazelnut croissant! It was very hefty and the filling was a lot! I felt like this croissant was very large so I ate half and saved the other half for later! I also got the decaf mocha less sweet! The cup was nice and large. The mocha was a little on the bitter side which was nice. The less sweet was definitely less sweet. ”
“ We recently discovered they have a new location of Backhaus - Burlingame on California who opened last November 2023. Paid metered street parking and a small lot next to the building. This location offers brunch, in addition to their usual baked breads and pastries. They have a 2nd floor that offers ample seating for their patrons. Large bay windows to let in the natural lighting. Two non-gender restrooms. The decor was simple yet you could see their kitchen area where they prepare, baked, & cook. The service was so nice and friendly. She recommended some of her favorites. We scooped up the last 3 remaining Raspberry Pistachio Croissants and a seasonal Coffeecake with Apple. Come early as they will run out of thing because they are so popular. Support your local business. ”
“ We came on a rainy Monday 2 days before Christmas, hoping to get some pastries for the holiday and a quick bite for breakfast. It was very crowded with nowhere to sit since they closed down the entire second floor for pick-up orders. The line moved fast and staffs were very friendly. We've always love their pastries at the San Mateo location, this location does have more brunch options available and the indoor space is a little bigger. Overall, all the pastries we have tried including but limited to morning bun, croissants, ham and cheese croissants are all delicious. One of my favorites is the speck and egg croissant. They serve ritual coffee here, which is also nice. ”
“ We've been eyeing this spot for a while and finally stopped by here on a Saturday morning! We mostly got the brunch items instead of the bakery items. Breakfast Sandwich (5/5): I was kind of skeptical about this one since it sounds kinda basic but my goodness was I proven wrong! The poppyseed brioche roll is fluffier than a heavenly cotton candy cumulus cloud -- I could use this as an edible soft pillow. You can definitely tell the house-made sausage patty is made from scratch -- it doesn't have that super-processed and porky, piggy-greasy taste that most other breakfast sausages have. The smoked gouda and roasted red pepper aioli add a naughty smokiness and savoriness that'll leave you desperately drooling for another bite like a primitive caveman. And that runny fried egg adds the finishing touches with a waterfall of gooey yolk leaking all over the sandwhich! Rye & Salmon (4/5): This rye bread has a delectable texture almost as chewy as a mochi sponge! There's an entire assorted bird feed blend of grains ranging in different sizes that provide a delicious oral texture in your mouth. The smoked salmon and veggies have a aesthetically pleasurable presentation, but the dish is a bit pricey considering how it doesn't come with enough salmon slices. I like the nice dishware they use here. The interior looks nicely renovated, but the floors could some more cleaning upstairs. Overall, what a tasty (though somewhat pricey) brunch experience! Would definitely recommend giving it a try if you're around Burlingame. ”
“ I have always enjoyed Backhaus bread -- that airy bread with a crunchy crust. For pastries, I like the savory ones better than the sweet ones. The San Mateo location does not have any indoor seating, so in this cold, rainy weather, my friend and I met at the Burlingame location. I got a speck and egg croissant bowl with hot chocolate and my friend got a scone with hot chai. It was not a filling meal, but enough to snack on for a quick meet-up with a friend. It took awhile for us to get our drinks though (1/2 star off). Although the Burlingame location has an indoor seating area, it was very crowded (1/2 star off). My friend and I parked ourselves at a condiments table. I do appreciate the indoor seating area, but wished it wasn't so crowded. It's best to order things to-go. ”
“ We found this gem of a bakery years ago in San Mateo. My mom is addicted to their Asiago black pepper loaf. She lives in Sacramento so anytime she visits me in the bay, she buys 2-3 loaves and freezes them. It's amazing! We had a girls weekend last weekend and had my grandma with us. We knew we had to stop by this location for breakfast and coffee before heading up to Graton Casino. Staff is always so welcoming and warm. The seating upstairs was pretty empty around 8am so we didn't have any trouble finding a table for 7. The elevator lift was convenient and helpful for granny. They definitely had the heater on our something because it was so nice and cozy up there! We enjoyed a variety of their croissants and breakfast items. We were surprised with how tasty the raspberry pistachio croissant was! We loved the mushroom sando, lox plate and Bfast sando. Grandma's favorite was the avocado toast, she literally killed it! Of course we took some goodies home. I love their epi loaves and always need to bring back extra plain croissants for breakfast sandwich throughout the week! Can't wait to be back!! ”
“ Perfect pastries! This is a super cute spot with a nice ambiance, good seating and cozy vibes. Plenty of seating options. My favorite is the Everything croissant bowl - with cream cheese and everything bagel seasoning. I also like the pistachio croissant. It's surprisingly not too sweet and pair so well with the coffee. The line moves fast to order the pastries but the drinks take a long time and that's my only gripe. ”
“ Long lines but moves fairly quickly. The spek-egg pastry is a must try. Another fan fav is the pistachio raspberry. Oh & dont forget to grab a loaf of bread to take home. Seating available ”
